LOCATION Strandgata 31, 9008 Tromsø, Norway | MUST TRY The Northern Lights |
Pack your wooly layers because this next stop has us venturing to the northernmost 7-Eleven store in Norway, Tromsø. This small coastal town sits well above the Arctic Circle and is known as one of the best places to view the Northern Lights in winter.
In mythology, the Northern Lights are known as a colorful bridge between heaven and earth. It was how Thor travelled between here and Asgard. The array of blue and green colors streaming across the night sky was not lost on us. Gazing up, we wondered, 'is this real life?”
Famous for its other nightlife, Tromsø is also called “the Paris of the north.” Speaking of night, if you want to literally go out all night, visit during the months of December and January when there is absolutely no sun at all!
The 7-Eleven we stopped in, recently renovated in 2020, surprised and delighted us. Not only did it have a variety of food offerings, like Skrei, a dried fish snack made from Arctic Cod (a local specialty that looks like a bag of chips), but it also offered food we were more familiar with like pizza (square slices), hot dogs and paninis.
Would it shock you to know the 7-Eleven closest to the Arctic Circle sells a lot of ice cream? We were. I mean, it’s -20° out, we’re bundled to the nose in wool and you think we’re getting ice cream? Well, the answer to that is yes. We always want ice cream.
So, the next time you’re headed to the Arctic Circle to take in the wonder of the Northern Lights, stop by the 7-Eleven in Tromsø, grab some snacks (before and after a night out) and bundle up for an adventure of the senses.
